I have 2x120Gb HDDs that I was hoping to re-use. One of them is knackered as it seems.
Whenever I connect it the PC just dies. Funny as I had never seen anything like it. Usually when you have an HDD with problems the PC boots up and works normally with the exception it can't read or write in the disk... so far, everytime I connect this particular one the PC starts throwing woblies... . I need to check this better but I am really surprised. The funny thing is that I had tried just the 750Gb with the previous mobo. . This has been the strangest thing I have ever seen.
More later or another day.. at least I can start the PC and have now all drivers in and working.
Has happened to me mate, recently, with vista 64. A sammie 750gb when connected would take down the whole system. Removed it, removed an old WD320gb and reinstalled the sammie, different sata port obviously and now no problem!!
Strange, that must be because of the SATA controllers... the funny thing is that I have two identical drives (besides the sammie) and one works and the other doesn't. What threw me off is that I removed them all from the previous config and had the same exact problem... and being the first time having this problem with SATA controllers I wasn't prepared on how bad they react... and that was with both Vista64 and Linux (Ubuntu)
I thought we were progressing but I do have a feeling that we don't follow the KISS technique with tthe new products. They become all clever and fast and... prone to spectacular failures.
The plot thickens but at the same time it is clearer well, not a literary post but I will explain
Snaga, you had the same problem right? and... by coincidence you have the same cady as me...
I just installed a working 750Gb HDD (sammie) in the PC and it worked... for 2 minutes
I am more and more convinced that the Icy Dok with its hot swapable capabilities plus other bits and pieces is the root of all my evils... I will take it out and try again...
... at least I will get to the bottom of this... as I said before let's see if I get out of all this without going mad
my life can resume.... found the problem. The ICY Dock is a piece of s**t that has been making my life miserable for weeks now.
Took it out, placed the lian-li cage from the other PC and presto. All HDDs up and running with no problems whatsoever.
I had to find out what was the problem
Just a shame as I was getting used to being easy to change drives... . Doesn't matter now. I have power and sata cables all over the PC now but I am happy. Will tidy everything up as soon as possible and continue.
My experience here for the world to know. lalalalala... getting mad
