Hi All

I have always had one question that is probably realy obvious but I would like to ask you guys about it. The question is why are monitors so expensive compared to TV screens? For example a 30" Monitor (http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/productdetail.aspx?sku=223-4890&cs=19&c=us&l=en&dgc=SS&cid=27530&lid=627063 have it for $1,999) and you can get a good TV with 50" for the same price (http://powersellernyc.com/product/view/Samsung-HLT5087S-50-1080p-LED-DLP-TV-20171.html have a 50" 1080p TV for $1464). So why does this occur; what advantages does a monitor have against a TV?

Thanks for trying to answer

Hi, more people will be able to help but...

TV screens need to "worry" about reproduction of decent colours an smooth action... computer screens need to provide blistering fast speeds to avoid ghosting (for example).

PC monitors may be used as TVs if plugged to a multimedia pc (well... any with a tuner) vice-versa is not entirely true.

Also, the types of panels may be different as even within the PC screens there are big ranges of prices.

Because the number of pixels in a given area is much much higher on a good computer monitor, than on a TV screen. This adds significantly to the cost of production.

For example, the 30" Dell (or any other 30" computer monitors) can display up to 2560x1920 resolution - thats a whopping 4.9 million pixels. All of which have to respond fast to changes to reduce ghosting.

Then there's all the inputs on a 30" computer monitor (eg, DVI, DVI, VGA, DisplayPort, SVHS, etc, etc), which also adds to the cost which may not be present on a 30" TV screen (maybe just a coaxial in and a scart socket or two).

The OSD for the 30" computer monitors had to be designed from the scratch due to the higher native resolution.

A 30" TV screen has 2 million pixels (for a 1080p, 1920×1080 capable screen) or less. You'll find a 1080p is quite a bit more expensive than a standard definition screen which has a 720p resolution (0.9 million pixels or 1280x720).
