Hello all,

I'm shortly expecting to pick up my newly upgraded PC from the boys at Vadim. Great timing as my wife has decided to go to South Africa for a week. Mr. Green

As I have replaced quite a few parts from my old rig, I've decided to take the plunge and try building my first PC from the ground up using the old parts. As a first timer, i'll be going for air cooling initially witha view to graduating to water cooling sometime in the near future. Here is a list of what I will inherit from the old rig. Any advice on additional parts which I intend to buy (from Vadim obviously) will be greatly appreciated.

Parts inherited are in bold. Additional parts which I need advice on will be left blank:

Case:
Cabling:
Cooling Mesh:
Fans type:
Cooling:
PSU:
Motherboard: Asus P5E WS
CPU: Intel Core 2 Quad 6850
Memory: (2x) OCZ DDR3-1800 2x1024MB Platinum Enhanced Bandwidth
Dual Channel
Graphics:
Physics:
Hard Drive: (4x) 32Gb Samsung 2.5" ATA SSD Drive with SATA converter in RAID 0
Storage HD: Hitachi Deskstar 1TB
Optical Drive:
Optical Drive 2:
Floppy Drive:
PCI card:
PCIe Device:
Sound Card:
Operating System:

I'm thinking of going with the Silverstone TJ07 as my case as it is spacious and will easily be able to accommodate watercooling at a future date.

I need some serious help on the air cooling!!! How many fans and what type? CPU cooler???

Other important parts such as PSU??? I'm thinking that 850W should be enough.

I should probably wait for the new generation of graphics cards to be launched rather than go for the 9800GX2.

All thoughts appreciated.

Shocked err... you have upgraded from

Wimper Sigh

TJ07 is a beautiful and great case to work with as is the V2110. If you like the Silverstone I would stick with it.

The PSU you are planning should be enough... are you sure you don't want to start with water?

if not I will leave for someone else to help with CPU coolers as I am a bit out of pace with those.

Graphics... you will need them to start the PC even if a cheapie... whilst you wait for the new gen graphics card.

Thanks Eu,

Your input is appreciated. I take your point on the graphics card.

Regarding the watercooling; do you really think a first timer can attempt it???

Shocked

hmmm... how good are you with workshop stuff? ... bu you're probably right...

have some fun spreading thermal paste on the CPU and getting it all with air... having a feel for the fans and other stuff... and then do the same but with a few tubes in the middle.

Also it will be interesting to move around in the bios, and creating partitions, etc... and getting to really know and design your PC.. and then start from scratch... Wink

I am sure you will have quite a few moments of frustration and of joy in the process.

Well,

I don't mind getting my hands dirty. Ill see how I get on with the thermal paste and the fans. I'm a bit apprehensive about the BIOS settings as I know that these can grill perfectly good components to a crisp if one doesn't know what they are doing Wink

But I think you're right about the rollercoaster ride of frustrations and joy!!

Hurray! Hurray! Hurray!

Those 4 SSDs in RAID-0 is just begging for a dedicated RAID controller rather than relying on the motherboard.

the onboard RAID can handle upto 200Mbs real tranfer rate with no problems without the need of a dedicated card Smile

Stez, I think Vincent just answered the query about RAID cards.

Eu, I dont really have a budget in mind but as this is my first build I probably don't want to go too crazy. Also, I'm just waiting on delivery of my newly upgraded rig which will be hard to beat. Having said that, it would be a shame to waste all those good components by buying something that won't keep up.

Vincent, thanks for the info. Keep your fingers crossed that I manage to build the rig without frying it. Wink Mr. Green
