Agreed with both points - for our work, the Xeons edges out due to being a better all rounder - though the slightly better Opteron fp instructions would help in our main application, it fall shorts in other areas, and power consumption is a big concern our temporary room with limited space and electricity.

I don't think the review is aimed at enterprise business class people - though I've known for some companies to source components off ebay - especially for 20 year old computing parts! At the home user like me, it's useful to have a similar spec for remote troubleshooting while on break and good to know what is out there.

Learnt something today, so I'm going to give you a rate bl4ckwizz4d Smile

Welcome bl4ckwizz4rd and thanks for taking the time to comment!

First of all, the test isn't very accurate because the processors are priced differently and also are clocked at different speeds. And buying a CPU from Ebay isn't the way companies do.

the closest match from Intel in terms of price is the Intel 5410 that currently retails for £205.27: http://www.vadim.co.uk/product34825/Intel+Xeon+5410

The new 2.33Ghz CPU has 12Mb of cache as opposed to the old Xeons that have just 8Mb of cache, plus the new Xeons are 45nm as opposed to 65. The purpose of the article was to see if the brand new AMD Barcelona can compete in terms of performance with the older, much older Xeons. It would have been unfar if we were to use an old Xeon 2.33 as given the current pricing of the new, power eficient 2.33Ghz, i doubt anyone would pay the £205.27 for an old 2.33Ghz Xeon.

Probaby a better comparison for the AMD 2350 would have been the Intel 5410, but then again - our intention wasnt just to compare the 2 current offerings from both camps, but to see if the new can beat the old.

Now in terms of benchmarks - wen AMD was strong, everyone was happy with the Super Pi and Passmark scores as AMD was always better, now when you ask AMD - why the situation changed, the answer normally is - whats important is the performance per watt etc. Here at Vadim we are concerned about performance for gaming and day to day applications and we made it clear that Floating Point and Integer Math calculations performance of the AMD processors is much better than on Intel and yes - there are applications that will relly on that, thats why the conclusion was mentioning this Smile
