Guys, how about doing two things in the configurator for the Extreme gaming machines:

1) remove all hdds that are smaller than 250Gb except SSD and raptors.
2) when raid cart with SAS is selected show a couple of SAS hdds in the options

What do you think?

Seems like a sensible plan.

I must admit I was looking for the SAS drives when playing around with the configuarator too, just never thought to mention it as I thought I was just too picky!

SAS is basically a new generation of the SCSI interface - Serial Attached SCSI (SAS), faster (and I dare say, a slightly more standarised connector than the craziness of previous SCSI incarnations - just come to my workplace for crazy SCSI connectors).

Down the SAS route, you could get a 15,400 rpm hard drive (I think they cost about 450 quid for 150GB or similar pricing schemes). It still uses SCSI protocols for commands despite being able to plug in a SATA drive into a SAS port.

SAS controllers can take SATA drives, but not the other way round.

The other thing about SCSI/SAS devices, they tend to have less CPU overhead than their IDE/SATA counterparts as there's more electronics involved.

That made a big difference back in the days when I had an SCSI drive and a IDE drive for my Amiga!

That's ok. I just placed 1 because the list is becoming quite extensive and if Vadim were to increse it with 1 or 2 SAS models it might become too big... but it is a matter of choice.

not anymore Mr. Green that's why I was raising this question. If people like myself and Fruim (and most of the rest) like speedy computers... why even look at raptors Sceptical Wink

One RAID card and 2 or 3 of these. The noise levels will be at a par with the raptor or higher but you can also get an enclosure.... and Voila... a stupidly fast PC with stupidly fast drives. I would only change tht for new SATA SSDs at a decent price Very Happy Mr. Green

Hurray!
