Hi guys,
we have done a bit of R&D with the backup softwares and we found Acronis True Image 11 to do a very good job and would like to offer them as an option in our builds.
The unique points is:
- It allows complete or incremental backups/restores
- it loads LAN drivers which means that you can restore from a NAS box
- you can chooce to load a single partition or more than one partition which means you can restore only one OS in case of playing up and keep the other one.
what do you think guys? the price for this will be about 20 quid more expensive than the current x-images and obviously you will get to keep the licence too.
Another issue, and i know that we have been asked to do it before - Antiviruses. One of our suppliers does Kaspersky OEM and if we are to offer that in our builds, we would charge arround the same price as Kaspersky charges for their retail products, but we will have them installed and updated with the all the cummulative updates.
Should we do this too?
H Vincent, when I first spoke about creating the X-Image it was with this sort of implementation in mind. I am 100% behind you on this.
Not only imcremental backups and Network recovery important but also the ability to browse the backup information to retrieve specific files (like DMC would have liked not long ago) is a plus.
Would you be replacing the x-image option completely with Acronis or is it just another option you could choose? Acronis looks great anyway, just wondering
I'm sure lots of people would really appreciate the option of preloaded antivirus software and Kaspersky is a really good choice!
I've read good things about Acronis, adding that option would be great. Adding an antivirus option couldn't hurt either, as long as it's a separate option and not an "all or nothing" configuration (quite a few people might prefer the free antivirus solutions available, I use AVG myself).
I've been using Acronis TrueImage for a while. Seems to work really well though I've not had to do an emergency restore to really try it out. I backup to an external USB drive and the bootable cd supports this should you not be able to get into windows.
Also, after much researching I'm using Kaspersky Internet Security and feeling very secure with it. Takes a bit of configuring but provides a very clear informative interface. USed to use Zonealarm but the Vista version is rubbish. Then moved to F-Secure which was secure but hard to configure and not very good on informing what it was doing. Really like Kaspersky and made use of the 50% off deal that was in the Times last week.
But different people like different apps for all sorts of reasons so offer as an option but I'd be wary of just installing trial versions.
Ghost and Acronis are standard applications for this sort of things but AV packages I have to agree... I use a specific one and, though I am not fussy in many things, I may not like the package you chose and that will make the package unecessarily expensive.
Definitely support the move to Acronis: essential for dual-boot systems where (as recently) wanted to X-image restore XP but would have had to do Vista too, unnecessarily.
This sounds like something I'd be interested in at some point, being able to access restore points off my NAS would be pretty cool. Not sure sure about the anti-virus choice, I still stick to my word that NOD32 is one of the best and cleanest systems you can install on a pc that wont be a resource hog.

Couldn't agree more about the AV- why not offer two options:
1. Free
2. Chargable
(For the record i'm a Kaspersky owner and have never looked back - they currently hold the king of the hill crown for stopping AV attacks)
On the imaging options - whilst i think you could offer both as options, if you were to go the extra mile for your customers - is there a free option when it comes to imaging that you can as a business recommend?
wow, thanks guys for the input - will definitelly add both acronis and kaspersky as separate options. we hate all preinstalations with all of them trials ourselves - we will install only when its specified. unfortunatelly there isnt a free of charge imaging program that we can recommend - i tried one personally, cant remeber the name, but was very limited in options and at the end of the day the charge for the acronis is quite acceptable for what it does
